Woman Who Raised 11 Children Beatified
An Italian mother who raised 11 children moved toward possible sainthood amid a Vatican campaign for large families.
Eurosia Fabris, known as Mama Rosa, raised two children whose mother died when they were little, then married their father and had nine children with him. She died in 1932.
Fabris was honored in a beatification ceremony in Vicenza, near her native village in northern Italy. Pope Benedict XVI has described large families as witnesses to “faith, courage and optimism” in society.
The average number of births per woman today in the European Union is 1.5, EU statistics show; in Italy and Spain, it is 1.3.
