A few first steps for beginners

Beginning exercisers can get overlooked by the fitness industry. But even those who have done little in the way of workouts can benefit from Leslie Sansone’s new video, “The Walk Diet,” (GoodTimes Entertainment, 2005) which outlines a doable program with a short learning curve.

“The Walk Diet”: Rank beginners or stop-and-start exercisers won’t be intimidated by Sansone’s latest video based on walking movements. The workout -- uncomplicated combinations of marching in place, low kicks, knee lifts and stepping side to side -- comes in two lengths. Incorporating arm movements helps get the heart rate up, and a warm-up, cool-down and stretches round things out. Sansone’s personable style makes up for the disappointing music. Creating an accessible workout was her goal. “A walking workout can get you started without injury and without getting you overwhelmed,” said Sansone from her Pennsylvania home. “Within five minutes of brisk walking, you’re burning calories and improving muscle activity, so even a little bit can make a difference.”

Price: $12.95 for VHS, $19.95 for DVD, available at Target, Wal-Mart and Kmart and on www.amazon.com.
