From Times Wire Reports

A Chinese city of 3.8 million people was digging 100 wells after shutting off taps that draw water from a river tainted by a chemical spill. Harbin also was trucking in bottled water.

An explosion at a chemical plant Nov. 13 killed five people and spilled benzene and nitrobenzene up the Songhua River in the city of Jilin.

The official China Daily newspaper said officials were tipped off by a trail of dead fish. Officials said drinking the water could damage blood cells and cause leukemia.
