NATO Barred From Using Bases, Airspace
Uzbekistan has told NATO allies that they can no longer use its territory or airspace to support peacekeeping missions in neighboring Afghanistan -- apparently in retaliation for Western criticism of its human rights record, alliance officials said in Brussels.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization officials said alternatives would be found and the mission would not be hurt.
Russia and Uzbekistan, a former Soviet republic, this month signed a treaty opening the way for a Russian military deployment in the Central Asian nation.
