Red-state welfare hurts California

Re “State at Risk to Lose Billion,”

Nov. 25

In 2003, California received 79 cents for every $1 paid in federal taxes, whereas red states such as Alaska and Mississippi got $1.90 and $1.83 per tax dollar paid, respectively. The proposed Republican-backed budget cuts would make this shortfall even more substantial for all Californians. No wonder we have a budget problem.

Californians also pay more for gasoline and other forms of energy, and even when it’s proven that it was taken illegally (remember Enron and the faux energy crisis of 2001) our “Collectinator” says all is forgiven and dismisses the billions of dollars Gray Davis was trying to get back from these corporate robber barons.

Is everyone else here as fed up as I am with paying for this red-state welfare? California is the fifth-largest economy in the world. We need to keep our money here. Can you say secession?
