Illegally Brewed Liquor Claims at Least 14 Lives
At least 14 people died after drinking illegal home-brewed liquor in India’s remote northeast, police said.
The death toll was likely to rise because 61 others were hospitalized after drinking the noxious brew Friday night in Tezpur, 110 miles north of Guwahati, the capital of Assam state, police officer L. Bora said.
Residents angry over the deaths attacked government offices and burned motorbikes and shops, Bora said.
Such incidents are common in rural India, where cheap, homemade brew is sometimes made with methyl alcohol, which can cause blindness or death.
