From Times Wire Reports
Just a week after residents began returning to the Algiers neighborhood of flood-ravaged New Orleans, a parochial school there reopened.
As St. Andrew the Apostle Elementary School sprang back to life, principal Sybil Skansi welcomed the students, many of whom had been displaced by Hurricane Katrina. “This is a family. This is a place you can call home now,” Skansi said.
City public schools remain closed, but officials are developing a plan to reopen some by November, subject to environmental, health and safety concerns.
