Architect’s 9/11 memorial resonates

KUDOS to Paul Murdoch [“Reading Symbolism in the Sept. 11 Era,” by Christopher Hawthorne, Oct. 5].

I cannot think of a more fitting or beautiful tribute to the innocent passengers on Flight 93 than an embrace of lovely red maples. “Hysterical” really is the correct term for anyone who sees a political or religious symbol in his work of art.

I AM a native New Yorker. I am hurt by 9/11 and the loss to my city. I don’t believe, though, that we, in New York or in America, are served by erecting memorials that remind us to be angry, to be aggressive, to be loud. To be afraid.

I look at Paul Murdoch’s crescent of maples and see other symbols: the new moon symbolizing a new beginning; glorious maple trees that will follow the changing seasons and symbolize, in the autumn, the bright light before darkness. I see peace. A reminder of what these lives on Flight 93 were given for: No damage, no hurt, more peace.

I am looking for an argument that makes sense. And I am finding a silencing of artistic voices, angry politicians and the very worst of what America has to offer.

Perhaps give the land back to nature. Let Her provide the dignity we seem unable to deliver.
