Tree Choppers Must Guarantee Their work
County supervisors voted Tuesday to require companies that chop down bark beetle-infested trees in the mountains to guarantee their work.
Companies with contracts exceeding $50,000 will have to buy “performance bonds,” which the county can then cash if the work is subpar.
The county has $70 million in federal funds to bankroll the tree-cutting program.
Supervisor Dennis Hansberger, the sole dissenter in the vote, said contractors would pass on the cost of buying the bonds to the county and that small companies would be unable to bid on large contracts.
