Rape Victim to Visit U.S., Receive Bravery Award
From Times Wire Reports
A Pakistani woman who won global fame but irked the government for speaking out about her gang rape left for the U.S. to receive an award for her courage.
Mukhtar Mai was declared Woman of the Year by Glamour magazine. She is to receive the $20,000 prize Nov. 2 in New York.
Mai, 36, braved threats and social stigma by going public about her 2002 assault, ordered by a village council in retaliation for her brother’s alleged affair with a higher-caste woman.
