Industrialist, Ex-Aide to Leader Held in Coup Plot
A former top aide to President Ilham Aliyev and the head of Azerbaijan’s largest chemical company have been arrested on charges of participating in a coup plot, officials said. Former Chief of Staff Akif Muradverdiyev and Fikret Sadykhov, who heads the Azerkimya chemical firm, allegedly conspired with opposition figure Rasul Guliyev and other officials who have also been dismissed recently.
Those sacked or arrested included former Finance Minister Fikret Yusifov, former Economic Development Minister Farhad Aliyev and former Health Minister Ali Insanov.
