From Times Wire Reports

A Barstow woman armed with a handgun was shot and killed by two San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies early Wednesday when they responded to a report of gunfire and she pointed the weapon at them, authorities said.

“When the deputies got to the home, they could still hear shots being fired,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Robin Haynal said. “When she pointed the gun at the deputies, they feared for their lives.”

The 31-year-old woman’s name was not released. She was pronounced dead at Barstow Community Hospital more than two hours after the 2:45 a.m. confrontation in the 45000 block of Palo Verde Lane in Newberry Springs.

The deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave pending a review of the shooting by the sheriff’s homicide unit, Haynal said.
