JDS Uniphase Corp., the world’s largest maker of parts for fiber-optic networks, posted a wider fourth-quarter loss after the company recorded a $53.7-million expense to write down goodwill.

The loss widened to $145.7 million, or 10 cents a share, from $21.7 million, or 2 cents, a year earlier. Sales fell 2.1% to $170.9 million in the quarter ended June 30.

The San Jose-based company delayed its results last month to complete an audit.
