Financial disaster on top of natural disaster

Share

You think the victims of Katrina are living in hell now? Wait until they discover that the new bankruptcy law that goes into effect soon will make it very hard for them to get out from under this financial disaster. You can bet creditors won’t give them a break. And who can they thank? President Bush and the Republicans. Think those folks in the South wish they could revote?

It is estimated that Katrina may cost insurers $30 billion. By comparison, the Iraq war costs about $5 billion per month. Bush said recovery could take years. If the U.S. was as committed to its citizens as it is to war, then the cost of the damage of Katrina could be paid out in half a year.

Let me get this straight. Katrina hits on Monday, the impact of which was not known until several hours later, and gas prices jump in L.A. on Wednesday? Surely there had to be at least a few days’ supply already paid for somewhere in the “pipeline,” so how is it that there is an immediate increase at the pump? Something has to be done to rein in the money-sucking oil companies.
