Too grand a plan

AS a Los Angeles theater supporter for over 30 years, I found it most dismaying to read the interview with Ricardo Montalban. One of the finest theater spaces in our city languishes while he realizes that it really is daunting to start up a resident theater company, create a subscriber base (an imperative in Los Angeles), produce multiple seasons of plays and maintain a 1,200-seat house in the heart of Hollywood.
It would be best for all concerned if someone in Montalban’s organization would persuade the anonymous benefactor to allow them to sell the theater and start up a resident company in a smaller house. In the meantime, a justly respected Hollywood icon and gentleman asks us to wait and see while an equally respected Hollywood landmark remains dark.
