The Defense Department last week also identified the following American military personnel killed in Afghanistan and Iraq:

Jason E. Ames, 21, of Cerulean, Ky.; specialist, Army. Ames died of noncombat-related injuries Wednesday in Mosul, Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) at Ft. Lewis, Wash.

Damion G. Campbell, 23, of Baltimore; staff sergeant, Army. Campbell was killed Aug. 26 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee while he was on patrol in Khayr Kot in eastern Afghanistan’s Paktika province, near the border with Pakistan. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment in Vicenza, Italy.

Gregory J. Fester, 41, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; major, Army. Fester was killed Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his dismounted patrol in Iskandariya, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was a reservist assigned to the Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Dennis P. Hay, 32, of Valdosta, Ga.; chief warrant officer, Army. Hay was killed Monday when his Kiowa helicopter was attacked with small-arms fire in Tal Afar, Iraq, west of Mosul. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Derek S. Hines, 25, of Newburyport, Mass.; first lieutenant, Army. Hines was killed Thursday when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire while conducting security operations in Baylough in southern Afghanistan’s Zabol province. He was assigned to the 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment in Vicenza, Italy.

Obediah J. Kolath, 32, of Louisburg, Mo.; sergeant first class, Army. Kolath died Aug. 28 in Landstuhl, Germany, of injuries suffered Aug. 25 when an improvised explosive device detonated near him in Husaybah in Iraq’s Al Anbar province. He was assigned to the Army Special Operations Command at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

Joseph L. Martinez, 21, of Las Vegas; specialist, Army. Martinez was killed Aug. 27 when his dismounted patrol was attacked with small-arms fire in Tal Afar, Iraq, west of Mosul. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Lowell T. Miller II, 35, of Flint, Mich.; captain, Army National Guard. Miller was killed Wednesday when his military training team, conducting operations with the Iraqi Army, was attacked with small-arms fire in Iskandariya, Iraq, south of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Regiment, Army National Guard in McComb, Miss.

Charles R. Rubado, 23, of Clearwater, Fla.; second lieutenant, Army. Rubado was killed Monday when his Abrams tank was attacked with smallarms fire in Tal Afar, Iraq, west of Mosul. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Ft. Carson, Colo.

Monta S. Ruth, 26, of WinstonSalem, N.C.; sergeant, Army. Ruth was killed Wednesday when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle while he was on a security patrol in Samarra, Iraq, north of Baghdad. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Benning, Ga.
