USC Coach Pete Carroll was upset with some of his players after the top-ranked Trojans were called for several unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties during their 63-17 victory over Hawaii on Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

USC was penalized nine times for 97 yards.

Dwayne Jarrett was flagged for excessive celebration after a touchdown and tight end Dominique Byrd was penalized for throwing the ball at a defender after he caught a pass.

The Trojans also were penalized three times for late hits.

“That’s just not the way we want our focus to go,” Carroll said. “That’s not what we’re all about.”

USC emerged from the opener without major injuries, but three players suffered minor injuries, according to a school official.

Freshman defensive end Kyle Moore suffered a sprained knee, guard Fred Matua a mild concussion and safety Darnell Bing a hip injury.

Kickers Mario Danelo and Troy Van Blarcom performed fairly well in their first college games.

Danelo, a redshirt sophomore, made all nine extra-point attempts, including one from 35 yards, but missed a 42-yard field-goal attempt.

Van Blarcom, who struggled in a team scrimmage a few weeks ago, kicked balls to the goal line or into the end zone on kickoffs.

Backup quarterback John David Booty completed two of five passes for nine yards, including a two-yard touchdown to Jarrett. It was Booty’s first touchdown pass.

As the third-string tailback behind Reggie Bush and LenDale White, sophomore Desmond Reed knows his chances to stand out are limited.

Against Hawaii, he found two opportunities.

Playing on the kickoff team, Reed scooped up a fumble and ran 15 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Then, with the Trojans holding a big lead in the fourth quarter, he rushed five times for 30 yards, including a play in which he started right and reversed field, sprinting 29 yards for another score.

“It’s hard seeing [Bush and White] get all the carries,” he said. “I just have to wait my turn.”

Dallas Sartz, who nursed a hip injury throughout training camp, finished with a team-best seven tackles. He had two tackles for losses, including a sack.

Middle linebacker Oscar Lua had four tackles and a sack in his first start. Sophomore defensive end Lawrence Jackson also had a sack.
