Police on Wednesday found the car used in the alleged abduction of a 14-year-old Ontario girl, but the girl and the man suspected of taking her remained missing, authorities said.

Investigators believe the girl has been abused by her suspected abductor, family acquaintance Elias Flores Martinez, 28, Ontario Police spokesman David McBride said.

Martinez telephoned the girl’s family Wednesday, telling them she was with him. Her family heard her voice in the background, police said. Police said he abducted the teenager Tuesday and that he may have taken her to Mexico.

Martinez was sentenced in October 2000 for felony sexual battery. Police said he groped two teenage girls in Ontario and tried to rape them.

Martinez pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 91 days in jail and three years’ probation. He also was ordered to register as a sex offender. McBride said Martinez was deported to his native Mexico following his jail term.

“He returned here [to Ontario] -- we believe he’s gone back and forth a few times -- but he never registered as a sexual offender,” McBride said.

McBride said Ontario police reports also show that Martinez’s wife twice called police to report that Martinez had assaulted her in 2003 and 2004. McBride said he did not know why charges were not filed against Martinez in those cases.

In May, Martinez also was identified as the suspect in the attempted kidnapping of a 17-year-old female family member in Guerrero, Mexico. Ontario police say that case is under investigation by Mexican authorities.

Martinez’s car was found at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Montclair. Police said there were no obvious signs of foul play found inside the vehicle.
