Signs of the Times Not That Different

I, for one, am getting tired of hearing fans whining about the ads across the outfield at Dodger stadium.

I was at the game honoring the 1955 World Series champion Brooklyn Dodgers a couple of weeks ago, and while watching the pregame video commemorating that memorable year, I couldn’t help but notice that virtually every inch of space at venerable Ebbets Field was taken up by -- guess what -- advertising!

Get over it. The McCourts can be legitimately criticized for a lot of things, but this shouldn’t be one of them.

I disagree with Bill Mouzis’ complaint about the throwback broadcast [Viewpoint, Sept. 3]. I found the telecast and accompanying education by Vin Scully to be thoroughly enjoying. I taped the game and upon further review, enjoyed the late ‘60s technology best. No clutter on the screen and no unnecessary close-ups. With the wretched performance on the field this year, the broadcasts have become the only entertaining part of the Dodgers.

And with Ross Porter replaced by two tawdry cheerleaders, Scully’s broadcasts are all that are left of the proud traditions that were being celebrated Aug. 29. If only the 1955 owner could be brought back.

It’s 9 o’clock, Dodgers down 2-1 in the seventh inning of a September game to the Giants, and I just flicked off the TV. Who really cares anymore? Who are those guys, anyway?

So, the Dodgers have reached 3 million in attendance earlier than ever. Just goes to show that Dodger fans are as loyal as dogs. A fitting simile given the state of play on the field.

Hey, all you Dodger fans who have attended Dodger Stadium this year that put money in the McCourts’ pockets, expect the same results next year. With McCourt, DePodesta and Tracy, the spin will be hot and heavy this off-season.

A few months back, Jamie McCourt announced her plans to try to make Dodger baseball more appealing to women. That’s great. As a woman and lifelong Dodger fan, here’s a little suggestion: How about not naming a man who beat his pregnant wife as man of the year?

Just imagine how much better the Dodgers would be with Adrian Beltre at third and Paul DePodesta at home.
