From out of the blue, a sight to see

Regarding “Rhapsody in Blue” [Sept. 6]: As a youngster who was obsessed with nature and vanishing species, I too mourned that I would never see a blue whale.
In August 1996, we took an 18-foot motorboat to Santa Barbara and followed a whale-watching boat in my quest to see a blue whale. The waves grew to a jarring 14 feet, and my 8-year-old son clung to me, whimpering.
After a couple of hours the water calmed and the fog burned off. Without warning the surface broke less than 25 feet in front of us. We saw the long ridge of a blue whale, moving from right to left. Then a second body broke the surface, much smaller -- a calf.
I got a thrill I’ll never forget, and a childhood wound was healed.
