Surgery Set for Drew

Times Staff Writer

J.D. Drew, out since suffering a broken left wrist when hit by a pitch on July 3, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right wrist and right shoulder Tuesday. The way Drew sees it, because the left wrist has not reacted to treatment and he is shut down for the rest of the season, he may as well take care of the other injuries.

“I knew at some point I’d have to get something done, just for quality of life,” Drew said. “I could play with it, but they do nag. I’ve been feeling that for a couple of years and it’s been gradually getting worse.

“Now it presents itself in a timely fashion to be ready for spring training.”

The Dodgers, as well as any other team negotiating for Drew’s rights, were aware he had issues with the wrist and shoulder when they signed him to a five-year, $55-million contract on Dec. 23, said Drew’s agent, Scott Boras, and Dodger Manager Jim Tracy.

But General Manager Paul DePodesta said he knew nothing of the right wrist.

“There were things we knew we were going to do over the off-season,” DePodesta said of the shoulder, referring to it as an “arthritic condition.”

The wrist surgery will be performed by Drs. Frank Jobe and Ralph Gambardella, and the shoulder procedure will be done by Dr. Norman Zemel.

And if Drew’s left wrist still bothers him within a month, he probably will have surgery to remove a bone chip in it.

The Dodgers officially rescinded their $2.98-million offer to pitcher Luke Hochevar, faxing notification to Boras on Wednesday.

DePodesta called it “a move to help clean up some of the events of the last 10 days.”

Hochevar, the club’s first pick in the June draft, agreed Sept. 2 to the bonus and signed a term sheet, after briefly signing with agent Matt Sosnick. Several hours later, Boras notified the Dodgers that he was again representing Hochevar.

Negotiations between Dodger scouting director Logan White and Boras have yet to resume, according to the team.

Right-hander Elmer Dessens will take rookie Edwin Jackson’s turn in the rotation and face the San Francisco Giants on Sunday, hoping for 60-75 pitches.

Told he will face Barry Bonds, who made his season debut Monday, Dessens smiled.

“OK, no problem,” Dessens said with a shrug, eliciting laughter.

“That’s good. I can’t wait to start again. I just want to do my part to help my team any way I can, working hard in a pennant race.”

Former Dodger Eric Karros, now a television analyst, took issue with a note in Wednesday’s Times that pointed out he did not beat out Hee-Seop Choi for the everyday first baseman position while both were with the Chicago Cubs in 2003.

He said it was because if he had been the everyday guy, a clause in his contract would have kicked in that would have paid him much more.

“So I wouldn’t have played me either,” Karros said. “Not that you care.”
