O.C. commission is a weapon against hate

I am very disappointed that Orange County wishes to curtail its support of the Orange County Human Relations Commission (Sept. 13).

The agency does excellent work in promoting cross-cultural understanding. Its living room dialogues are especially noteworthy, providing an opportunity for people to express feelings, fears and opinions in a safe environment. That Orange County had a 30% increase in hate crimes in 2004 shows how much this agency is needed -- an expanded agency, not a diminished one. I am embarrassed that my city does not support this agency and that it eliminated its own. Ironically, this story was next to a piece on the killing of a transgender teen and an attack on Southern California synagogues. We must support any group working toward the elimination of hate.
