Jon Grant threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Blaise Smith with eight seconds left Saturday night and UC Davis stunned Stanford, 20-17, to spoil Coach Walt Harris’ home debut for the Cardinal.

Harris, brought in to replace Buddy Teevens after three straight losing seasons, is off to a rough start at Stanford (1-1), becoming the first Cardinal coach to lose to a non-Division I team.

The Aggies (1-2) who are in the third year of a four-year transition from Division II to Division I-AA, were not intimidated by the environment, keeping Stanford’s offense out of the end zone all game and giving up only 180 yards for the night.

After T.C. Ostrander’s last-ditch pass fell incomplete at the five-yard line, the Aggies celebrated in the end zone, and Harris looked stunned as he walked off the field with his team. The Aggies then ran to the corner of the stadium to thank the thousands of fans who made the two-hour trip from Davis for the game.

UC Davis played its first game against a Division I-A team in eight years and beat a I-A team for the first time since 1986 against Pacific. It was the first time in 65 years the Aggies had faced a team that currently is in the Pac-10 and they lost to Stanford the only previous time they played, 59-0, in 1932 when Pop Warner was Stanford’s coach.

No. 11 Louisville 63, Oregon State 27 -- Brian Brohm threw for 368 yards and five touchdowns and the Cardinals (2-0) topped 50 points for the ninth time under Coach Bobby Petrino in the rout over the Beavers (2-1) at Louisville, Ky.

Mario Urrutia caught seven passes for 175 yards with two touchdowns for Louisville, which tied a record for points by an Oregon State opponent.

Louisville linebacker Brandon Johnson blocked a punt and returned an interception for a score and defensive end Elvis Dumervil set an NCAA record with his ninth sack in consecutive games.

Oregon State quarterback Matt Moore completed 25 of 48 passes for 317 yards. The Beavers lost to a ranked opponent on the road for the seventh consecutive time.

No. 12 Purdue 31, Arizona 24 -- Jerod Void carried 18 times for 107 yards, scored three touchdowns and recovered a muffed punt return, helping the Boilermakers (2-0) hold off the Wildcats (1-2) at Tucson.

Brandon Kirsch passed for 140 yards and ran for 54 for Purdue, which took advantage of the muffed punt return and a failed fake punt by Arizona to score 10 points in the decisive third quarter.

Richard Kovalcheck completed 23 of 40 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns for Arizona.

Void topped 100 yards for the second time this season and, with 30 rushing touchdowns, tied Perry Williams for second on Purdue’s career list. Mike Alstott had 39 from 1992 to 1995.

No. 15 California 35, Illinois 20 -- Justin Forsett ran for a career-high 187 yards and two touchdowns, and Tim Mixon returned a fourth-quarter punt 79 yards for a score to lead the Golden Bears (3-0) to an impressive second-half rally over the Fighting Illini (2-1) at Berkeley.

Marcus O’Keith rushed for a late score and caught a 26-yard touchdown pass from Joe Ayoob for California, which played without star tailback Marshawn Lynch, who sat out because of a broken finger, and two starters on its powerful offensive line.

Trailing by 10 points at halftime, Cal won its ninth straight home game with four touchdowns in 17 minutes spanning the final quarters.

No. 18 Arizona State 52, Northwestern 21 -- Sam Keller passed for 409 yards and four touchdowns and freshman Keegan Herring ran for 197 yards and two scores to lead the Sun Devils (2-1) over the Wildcats (2-1) at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State rebounded from a 35-31 loss to No. 3 Louisiana State last week by accumulating a school-record 773 yards, 532 in the first half. Rudy Carpenter, Keller’s backup, ran two yards with 2:30 left to push the total past the 743 yards the Arizona State had against Stanford in 1981.

Keller, who threw for 461 yards against LSU, tossed a 36-yard scoring pass to Jamaal Lewis, a 24-yarder to Derek Hagan, went 15 yards to Rudy Burgess and 30 yards to Matt Miller.

Washington 34, Idaho 6 -- Louis Rankin rushed for 115 yards in 19 carries, including a 48-yard touchdown, and the Huskies (1-2) ended an eight-game losing streak and gave Coach Tyrone Willingham his first victory after defeating the Vandals (0-3) at Seattle.

The Huskies won for the first time in almost a year -- since beating San Jose State, 21-6, at home Oct. 9, 2004.
