Deputy Wounded, Suspect Is Arrested
A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was shot in the shoulder early Friday and a suspect was arrested after a 9 1/2 -hour manhunt, authorities said.
The man was taken into custody about 1:30 p.m. in an area near the shooting scene, Deputy Colin Matsumoto said. The suspect’s identity was not immediately released.
Deputy Jesse Melgoza and his partner were questioning a person about 4:10 a.m. when a man a “short distance away” began firing at them with a rifle, officials said.
The deputies fired back and the man fled.
Melgoza, an 11-year veteran, was treated at a hospital and released.
His partner, Deputy Arturo Gabriel, was not hurt.
