Premier Names Deputy as Caretaker Leader

Departing Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra appointed a Cabinet colleague as caretaker leader until a new government is formed.
Thaksin told crowds of supporters outside party headquarters that he would not stay on in a caretaker role but would let Deputy Prime Minister Chitchai Wannasathit become acting prime minister.
Thaksin, faced with allegations of corruption, announced he would step down after weekend elections drew a boycott and millions of protest ballots.
