Unions Set Deadline for Repeal of Labor Law
French trade unions set an April 15 deadline for repeal of a youth jobs law, sensing victory amid mass protests and sliding ratings for the government.
Students, who blocked roads in several cities, threatened more protests against Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin’s government.
President Jacques Chirac has promised amendments to the employment law, which makes it easier for businesses to hire and fire workers younger than 26 during a two-year probation period. De Villepin championed the law as a way to cut youth unemployment, but critics say it erodes job security safeguards.
