London, Dublin Issue Ultimatum to Parties
The British and Irish prime ministers, Tony Blair and Bertie Ahern, issued an ultimatum to Northern Ireland’s divided politicians: Elect a power-sharing administration by November or your legislature will be disbanded.
Blair and Ahern stood side by side in Armagh to announce that the Northern Ireland Assembly would reconvene May 15 for the first time since a coalition collapsed in October 2002.
The result, they said, must be a vote to form an administration sharing power between the Democratic Unionists and Sinn Fein, the party linked to the Irish Republican Army.
