General Motors Corp. said it expected to see net cost savings of about $13 billion over six years from its healthcare deal with the United Auto Workers union.

GM, in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, also said it might take a pre-tax charge of at least $1 billion in the first quarter of 2006 as it begins to account for payments to a fund created for future retiree healthcare costs.

Separately, GM said it opposed a request by Delphi Corp. to drop 5,000 unprofitable contracts, saying the parts supplier had failed to show the move would help its ailing business.
