U.S. fails to embrace its greatest export

Share

I agree with Jonathan Chait that passing a constitutional amendment to elect the president by popular vote would be nearly impossible (Opinion, April 9). It’s that word “nearly” that has my motor running. The electoral college was created at a time when Americans did not directly elect senators or the president. We fixed half the problem years ago but failed to fix the entire problem. Today, we still elect the president through an indirect process.

It’s absurd that our greatest export -- democracy through direct elections -- is OK in Iraq and Afghanistan but not in the U.S.
