Is healthcare a right or a privilege?
Re “Healthcare Bill Is a Vital Sign of Bipartisan Progress,” column, April 9
Hoorah to the recently approved bipartisan plan to make healthcare accessible to 95% of Massachusetts’ uninsured. In today’s Republican-weighted governmental climate, it’s reassuring to witness the success of legislation designed for the benefit of less-privileged Americans. Healthcare is not a Mercedes Benz, a million-dollar home or a pair of Prada shoes; it is an elemental human right, not a privilege. Gov. Mitt Romney and the Massachusetts Legislature should be commended.

Re “ ‘Hummer in every pot’ healthcare,” Opinion, April 8
How can California require every person in the state to carry health insurance when a large percentage of the population is not “here”? This will not solve the problem: The uninsured illegal aliens will still be uninsured because they are not legally listed as Californians. Those who are uninsured and legal residents will be required to pony up for the illegals. Once again, pie-in-the-sky dreamers are applying a Band-Aid to a multiple compound fracture.
