VENICE in winter is more tranquil than in the summer. It was a quiet December morning in Piazza San Marco when Makiko Nerio photographed these silhouetted gondoliers in front of the island San Giorgio Maggiore using a Canon Digital Elph. “It was chilly, but there weren’t as many tourists there, which was a big perk,” said Nerio, an insurance adjuster from Chino.
