April 17, 1930: Famed illustrator Norman Rockwell, 36, married 22-year-old Mary Barstow, a local schoolteacher and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Barstow. The wedding took place at the Barstow home at 125 Champion Place in Alhambra. “The bride, in an afternoon gown of Avalon blue crepe trimmed with a deep ecru lace, and with which she wore beige hat and shoes, carried a bridal bouquet of white roses, gardenias and lilies of the valley,” The Times reported, adding that though the couple would “make their home” in New York, “they expect to spend their winters in California.” The Times said, “The romance had its inception only a few weeks ago.” The Rockwells had three sons before Mary died in 1959 at the age of 51.
