Assad Questioned in Hariri Slaying Inquiry

From Times Wire Reports

U.N. investigator Serge Brammertz interviewed Syrian President Bashar Assad about whether his nation had a role in the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, United Nations officials said.

The meeting was the first between investigators and the Syrian leader since the U.N. launched its inquiry in June into the February 2005 killing of Hariri. The truck bombing also killed 22 others. There was no news of how the interview had gone.

A U.N. report last year by Brammertz’s predecessor implicated senior Syrian security officials in Hariri’s killing and said Syria was impeding the inquiry.
