CHAIRS, Ray Azoulay says, “speak volumes about the times and cultures they come from.” Carlo Bugatti’s 1902 Opium chair, shown here, “screams avant-garde crazy,” while pieces from R.M. Schindler’s Kings Road House in West Hollywood “are more of a whisper.” Both are part of a historical exhibition this weekend at the 11th annual Los Angeles Antiques Show. “The idea is to get people to understand that pieces from different periods can coexist,” says Azoulay, curator of the exhibit, owner of the Venice store Obsolete and one of 67 dealers vetted by the Antique Dealers Assn. of California. The event runs Friday through Sunday at Barker Hangar, Santa Monica Air Center. Admission is $15. (310) 455-2886; www.losangelesantiqueshow.com.

OPENINGS

Their lofty idea

Brett and Ceci Hershberger closed their Redondo Beach store and opened Artifacts Home Interiors farther south, hoping to capitalize on the loft craze in Long Beach. To finance the move, the couple sold their dream home. So far, no regrets. “Now we fix other people’s homes,” says Ceci, who handles the store’s free in-home consultations. The showroom is one of only two in the L.A. area to sell Della Robbia’s budget-minded Focus 1 Home series. 50 E. 4th St., Long Beach; (562) 983-7828; www.artifactshome.com.

TRENDSPOTTING

A real retro fit

At the International Home Furnishings Market, which opens today in High Point, N.C., the look of the future hails from the past. Thomas O’Brien, Target’s “vintage modern” man, is one of many designers finding inspiration in the proportions and materials of the 1930s Streamline Moderne style. His new TOB collection for the Hickory Chair Co. exemplifies the trend with the round-edged Gladding Cabinet, above, inspired by French Art Deco ($7,560 in walnut). The button-tufted Dabney side chair ($950) strikes a similarly clean silhouette. The collection hits stores in August. For dealers, go to www.hickorychair.com.
