Tim McKay, 59, a longtime environmental activist in Humboldt County, died of a heart attack while bird watching Sunday at Stone Lagoon north of Eureka, Calif.

As founder and executive director of the Northcoast Environmental Center, McKay worked more than 30 years on assorted environmental issues, including cleaning up beaches, keeping the Siskiyou Wilderness free of development, protecting the northern spotted owl and investigating the causes of salmon deaths in the Klamath River.

He opposed the construction of Gasquet-Orleans Road, which was intended to cut through a wilderness area, and campaigned against a liquefied natural gas terminal planned for Humboldt Bay.
