Toshiba and SanDisk to Build Chip Plant

Toshiba Corp. and SanDisk Corp. are investing about 600 billion yen ($5.2 billion) to build a manufacturing facility to make NAND flash memory chips, the companies said.

Tokyo-based Toshiba and Milpitas, Calif.-based SanDisk said they had started construction of a fourth plant in Yokkaichi, Japan. They said they hoped to jointly grab 40% of the growing NAND flash memory market by 2008, which Toshiba expects to expand to 2.6 trillion yen, or about $23 billion.
