President Takes Early Lead in Vote Count

President Joseph Kabila’s share of the vote in Congo’s historic elections surpassed 50% as 1 million more ballots were counted and certified, official results showed.
Officials said 3.2 million votes had been counted, with more than 16 million to go.
The president now has 53%, to 19% for Jean-Pierre Bemba, a former rebel leader in the civil war who serves as vice president in a postwar unity government.
