Ex-Univision Manager Named to SEC Post
The Securities and Exchange Commission said Wednesday that it hired Diego Tomas Ruiz, a former manager at Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications Inc., to be executive director, where he will oversee the agency’s finances.
Ruiz worked for 10 years at Century City-based Univision before joining another agency, the Federal Communications Commission, in February as deputy chief of strategic planning and policy analysis, the SEC said in a statement.
Ruiz, who is slated to start at the SEC next week, will take responsibility for the agency’s budget and financial reporting at a difficult time. After a series of funding increases after the scandals at Enron Corp. and WorldCom Inc., the agency’s funding has leveled off, prompting a hiring freeze and other cost cuts.
Ruiz brings a “proven track record of financial and budgetary responsibility that will be exceptionally helpful,” SEC Chairman Christopher Cox said in the agency statement.
“Diego is committed to ensuring that the SEC remains the employer of choice for financial professionals within the federal government.”
Ruiz replaces James McConnell, who retired as the SEC’s executive director in June after holding the position since 1990.
