Rescuers searched the ash-coated slopes of a volcano in Ecuador for 30 missing people after a devastating eruption sent lava, rocks and vapor onto Andean villages, forcing tens of thousands to flee.

At least one person was killed and dozens suffered injuries, mainly burns, when Tungurahua erupted Thursday.

Ash fell about 140 miles away.

Ecuador’s Geophysics Institute warned that the volcano, which is about 85 miles south of Quito, the capital, could erupt again. Authorities had ordered the evacuation of a dozen hamlets on the volcano’s slopes.
