Share

Los Angeles Opera will premiere a multimedia work commissioned to honor famed trumpeter Rafael Mendez, “Concierto para Mendez,” on Oct. 14 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

The 50-minute piece, with music by Lee Holdridge and libretto by Richard Sparks, will be presented free twice, at 1 and 2:30 p.m., as part of National Hispanic Cultural Heritage Month.

The work follows Mendez from his birth in rural Mexico in 1906 through his immigration to the U.S. and his breaking down of ethnic barriers to become a celebrated performing and recording artist. Mendez died in Encino in 1981.
