Tropical Storm Ernesto Might Menace the Gulf
The fifth tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Ernesto, formed in the Caribbean and could become a hurricane threatening U.S. oil and gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico next week, forecasters said in Miami. The storm was expected to strengthen over the warm waters of the Gulf.
The governments of Haiti and Jamaica issued storm watches, and the National Hurricane Center said residents of the Cayman Islands and western Cuba should also be on guard.
Meanwhile in the eastern Atlantic, Tropical Storm Debby posed no threat to land.
