Give Dorrell Some Credit for This

Share

The criticism of Karl Dorrell for taking away Andrew Baumgartner’s scholarship is totally unfair. The football program has a limited number of scholarships available each year.

If Coach Dorrell had one that was open last season but knew it possibly wouldn’t be available for this season because it was earmarked for incoming recruits, what should he have done, not use the scholarship at all and let the money go to waste? Not go after another recruit because he wouldn’t have another scholarship to give?

Baumgartner knew that the deal would possibly be for just a year; maybe he should have told his parents to better prepare them. The slant of Bill Plaschke’s story should have accented the positive, of Coach Dorrell rewarding a student for his hard work, even if it was only for a season.

Instead, now Dorrell might be hesitant to help out another deserving walk-on in the future.
