Gerald Ford Returns Home After Two Heart Procedures
Former President Gerald R. Ford, 93, returned to his Rancho Mirage home Monday after a two-week stay at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he received a pacemaker and underwent angioplasty.
On Thursday, stents were placed in two coronary arteries to improve blood flow. Doctors implanted a pacemaker Aug. 21, Mayo Clinic spokeswoman Carolyn Petersen confirmed.
Both procedures went smoothly, according to statements from Ford’s chief of staff, Penny Circle.
Ford’s office also issued a statement Monday thanking the Mayo Clinic staff for its care and those Americans who offered good wishes.
The 38th president has struggled with health problems: He visited Vail Valley Medical Center last month while vacationing in Beaver Creek, Colo., when he experienced shortness of breath. He was hospitalized 12 days with pneumonia in Rancho Mirage in January, underwent medical tests in December and has suffered two strokes and a dizzy spell since 2000.
The oldest living president served from 1974 to 1977, taking office when Richard M. Nixon resigned during the Watergate scandal.
