Eungie Joo, director and curator of the Gallery at REDCAT, CalArts’ outpost at Disney Hall, has received the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement.

The biannual prize, established in 2001 by the Menil Collection in Houston and named for its founding director, grants a $15,000 stipend in recognition of “early and mid-career achievement in contemporary art.”

Joo, 37, who received a doctorate in ethnic studies at UC Berkeley, established herself as a writer and curator in New York and Oakland before taking charge of the fledgling L.A. arts center in 2003. Her REDCAT projects include exhibitions of works by Kara Walker, Dorothy Kilgallen, Gimhongsok and Sora Kim, and a pair of shows by Chinese artists Song Dong and Yin Xiuzhen opening Wednesday.
