Inauguration or coronation?

Re “Fundraising beat goes on for Gov.,” Dec. 3

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he is going to build a stronger, unified California. I have an idea for a great start. Go ahead and raise the same amount of money it would take to finance the inaugural ceremony that the governor has envisioned. But instead of actually having a Hollywood production and grand luncheon, give the money to support California residents in need. Of course, you need to let the donors know your intentions -- any other pretense would be dishonest.

These needs could be as simple as getting meals to the elderly or helping out the families of California National Guard soldiers who are now struggling with financial burdens because of extended tours in Iraq. I’m sure that the people attending the luncheon would be willing to eat cold sandwiches and salads if they knew the money was going to help other Californians in need.

Is Schwarzenegger looking for an inauguration or coronation? This doesn’t sound much like someone who is representing the “people’s interests.”
