Electoral College hurts California
Re “Giving California a voice in presidential contests,” column, Dec. 11
Although changing primary election dates is nice, what would really give California a voice in presidential contests is the elimination of the Electoral College. Right now, California has about 70 times the population of Wyoming, yet the vote of each Wyoming resident counts about four times as much as Californians’. But to abolish the Electoral College, the lightly populated states would have to agree to a constitutional amendment to change to a popular vote system, thereby giving up their extra advantage. Glendale and Anaheim together have more people than Wyoming.
As is, not only are Californians spectators in the presidential race, but compared to citizens in other Western democracies, Californians and Americans have less democracy.
