Competency hearing ends after outburst

From Times Wire Reports

The man accused of kidnapping Elizabeth Smart from her bedroom in 2002 and holding her for nine months was declared unfit to stand trial after screaming at a judge to “forsake those robes and kneel in the dust.”

A hearing in Salt Lake City to review Brian David Mitchell’s mental competency was quickly ended after his loud stream of outbursts and discussion of a report by his doctor that he was not participating in therapy.

“Repent ye, repent ye. Forsake your idolatry,” said Mitchell, whose hands were cuffed to a chain around his waist. Smart’s family was not at the hearing.
