Two candidates qualified for the March 6 special election for the City Council’s 7th District seat and three others filed citizen petitions by Thursday’s deadline, the city clerk said.

Richard Alarcon, a state senator, and Monica Rodriguez, a former community deputy to former Mayor Richard Riordan, both secured spots on the ballot.

Waiting to see if their petitions are OKd are self-described businessman Oscar Mendoza, plumbing engineer Hal Alvord and retired administrative assistant Margie Carranza.
