The 18-year-old suspect in an attack on a Massachusetts gay bar and in two subsequent killings died of wounds he suffered in a shootout with Arkansas police.
Jacob D. Robida died at Cox South Hospital in Springfield, Mo., a hospital spokesman said.
Investigators said a policeman who stopped the teen on a traffic violation Saturday in northern Arkansas had not known it was Robida, wanted in a hatchet and gun attack that injured three men Thursday in New Bedford, Mass.
Robida fatally shot the officer, led police on a chase, crashed, then fatally shot his passenger and opened fire on police, investigators said. Police said Robida and his passenger, Jennifer Rena Bailey, 33, of Charleston, W.Va., knew each other.
