Colombian aircraft bombed leftist rebels in one of the country’s biggest nature reserves after police were attacked as they stood guard over workers ripping out coca plants, the air force said.

The military said it attacked guerrilla camps in La Macarena national park Wednesday night. On Wednesday, rebels launched a mortar attack that killed six police guards, bringing to 12 the number slain in the first month of the coca-removal operation.

Police estimate that coca planted in the park helps the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, produce 27 metric tons of cocaine a year.
